Transforming Human-animal Relationship through Dog Photography – From Symbols of Ownership to Emotional Companions

초록

This study explores the transformation of human-animal relationships through dog photography, analyzing how visual representations shifted from symbols of ownership to emotional companionship. Using visual semiotics alongside theories from emotional sociology, the research examines aristocratic portraits from the 19th century, mid-to-late 20th-century family photographs, and contemporary SNS images. Findings show dogs transitioned from symbols of status and power in the 19th century, to integral family members symbolizing emotional bonds in the mid-to-late 20th century, and finally, into digital content expressing individual identities and emotions in the 21st century. This study contributes academically by clarifying photography’s socio-cultural role in reshaping human-animal relationships and contemporary visual culture.should be placed here.
