The concept of urban revitalization is being expanded to rediscover overlooked urban spaces that possess rich layers of civic resources. The large-scale, public wholesale marketplaces that have been rooted in many communities for a long time are just one example of these underutilized spaces. With this trend, sociocultural elements to integrate into these underutilized spaces have emerged with the aim of building a stronger reciprocity with the community by creating local placemaking in terms of regional competitiveness. In order to build place attachment, it is important to regenerate urban spaces using sensitive approaches that take multiple stakeholders into account. The author evaluated an inner-city wholesale flower marketplace in Seoul, seeking to rediscover its potential as a communal green space for urban conservation and sustainable development. The research was structured to investigate the market's site context and embedded resources through qualitative field observation, followed by a perception survey that sought feedback from three interest groups: wholesalers, visitors, and residents who lived in the vicinity. The survey asked about the area's current condition and the potential to reutilize existing infrastructure by integrating ecological and sociocultural aspects. The three groups had different views; however, the consensus recognized the need to rebrand the market through conservation and appreciated that its embedded qualities could be employed for future restoration. Participatory experiences that were facilitated before actual redevelopment took place will provide a sense of authenticity to conserve the green zone's viability and attain sustainable competitiveness.
