초록
This study examined the fourth round sports talks for the formation of a unified North-South team for the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. South Korea analyzed North Korea’s attitudes and strategies up to the third round of talks and established the basic direction for the formation. The prospects for the fourth round were not particularly promising, owing to the fundamental differences between the two Koreas regarding the talks and the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) proposal for an early conclusion of the negotiations. Through the fourth round of talks, the issue of the Single South-North team’s official designation was fully resolved. Provisional agreements were also reached on the appointment of the head coach and coaching staff, as well as the establishment of a joint body. However, during the deliberation process, disagreements arose between the two Koreas on multiple issues, including the Chinese character notation and Korean pronunciation of the team’s name, athlete selection, and the composition of the delegation. North Korea accepted South Korea’s proposals. The evaluations and outlooks held by both sides regarding the talks contained a mixture remained negative elements.
