Choreographers' Leadership Roles: Based on Competing Values Framework

초록

Choreographers' Leadership Roles: Based on Competing Values FrameworkChoe, Sang-cheul(Kongju National University)Dance is a form of arts that is created by a choreographer. And choreographers design movements of highly skilled dancers to compose dance. Dance is not the expression of a dancer's feelings, but the expression of a choreographer's perceptions. Choreographers are people who create external images based on their own internal processes. They impose the objective symbols to their subjective ideas. Choreography is an externalization of the essence of a choreographer from within and an objective expression of his or her subjective realities. Dance, which is a creation of a choreographer, expresses human thoughts and feelings through human bodies. Dance conveying no meaning is mere body movements, which are the basic differences between dance and sports. Artists interpret their own experiences and express them into an imaginable aesthetic form; and choreographers deliver an artistic presentation ―which is usually a combination of dancers' movements and other elements― to the audience. The creative products of choreographers are presented to the audience through the interplay of dancers' movements and other elements(e.g. costumes, lighting, musical rhythms, and stage settings). For dance to have a survival value as an artistic form, there should be audiences who can understand and appreciate the meaning of it. And dance is performed within the constraining structure of time, space, people, and resources. In theory, choreographers can exert infinite creativity. In practice, however, the creativity of a choreographer can be realized within the boundaries of the constraining structure(Denhardt & Denhardt, 2006:14). Differing from other artistic creation such as writing and painting, choreography requires various social interactions and resource management capabilities. That is, choreographers need to be skilled in managing the interaction among dancers, support staffs, and audiences and they should be capable of deploying various resources to create dance. To create dance and deliver it to the audience, choreographers should be able to make dancers understand meaning of their creations and embody it into body movements, and they should utilize available resources(e.g. human resources such as support staffs and physical resources such as costumes, lighting, musical rhythms, and stage settings). As leaders, choreographers are supposed to lead dancers and other stake holders effectively and they should be able to manage resources efficiently. Review of existing literature shows a paucity of literature on the roles and qualities that choreographers should have as artists; but the literature on what roles choreographers should play as leaders who plan and manage a performing art is rare. It is assumed that choreographers should have leadership competencies in addition to artistic capabilities to embody their creations effectively. And the aim of this research is to build a normative model of choreographers' leadership roles based on competing values framework (Quinn, 1988; Quinn, Faerman, Thompson, & McGrath, 1996).
