A Study on Distributed Shared Logs System for Stateful Serverless Computing

As serverless computing advances, the demand for stateful workloads requiring complex state management is increasing. However, existing cloud storage solutions struggle to simultaneously satisfy the unique requirements of serverless environments, such as low latency, strong consistency, and fault tolerance. As a solution to this problem, the distributed shared log, which provides guaranteed record ordering and fault tolerance, is gaining attention. This paper analyzes research trends in shared log-based stateful serverless systems, focusing on three key systems: Boki, FlexLog, and IndiLog. These systems evolved by targeting and solving critical bottlenecks inherent in applying shared logs to serverless environments, demonstrating a methodical approach rather than isolated advancements.
