초록

This study examines the artistic oeuvre of Franz Ludwig Catel, a prominent early nineteenth-century German painter of the ‘Deutsch-Römer’ school, through an analysis of two representative works: Schinkel in Naples and Crown Prince Ludwig in a Spanish Wine Tavern in Rome. These paintings transcend mere portraiture or travel documentation, instead constituting complex aesthetic and cultural-historical tableaux in which the spatiality of Italy and the German self intersects. The primary aim of this study is to examine how artistic exchanges and cultural ideals between Germany and Italy in the early nineteenth century were visually articulated in Catel’s oeuvre. Schinkel in Naples presents a contemplative portrait in which classical idealism and Romantic sensibility converge within a spatial framework, integrating ancient artifacts, natural landscapes, and psychological depth into a unified composition. Conversely, Crown Prince Ludwig in a Spanish Wine Tavern in Rome operates as a cultural document that visually condenses the multi-layered urban space of Rome and the intricate networks linking German artists with their patrons, thereby reflecting contemporary artistic discourse. Together, these paintings construct a multifaceted aesthetic terrain where the spatial particularities of Italy intersect with German identity, thereby illuminating the dynamics of cultural exchange and the spirit of the age. This analysis repositions Catel not simply as a landscape painter but as a reflective traveler who created an artistic space in which Italian ideals and German selfhood dynamically interacted within the cultural milieu of early nineteenth-century Europe. Furthermore, it demonstrates that Catel’s oeuvre functions beyond personal portraiture or travel writing, operating instead as an aesthetic archive that encapsulates composite identities and intercultural dialogues within early nineteenth-century European culture.
