The effect of physical education in Kindergarten on fundamental motor skill development

초록

Skill development is affected by many factors and, among many, physical education program might be considered as key elements but still need to be empirically investigated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare gross motor development of young children enrolled in educational institution which provides a physical education program, and children enrolled in educational institution without physical education programs. Forty children were divided intro two groups: 20 children constituted the experimental group and participated in physical education class, once a week; 20 children constituted the control group and participated in regular kindergarten class without physical education programs. All these children were evaluated performing the locomotor and object control subtests of Test of Gross Motor Development-2(TGMD-2) at the beginning and at the end of the experiment. Results revealed that both children’s groups showed similar raw skill score at pretest. Differently, after 10 weeks, experiment group showed higher raw skill score than children in control group. These results demonstrated that physical education class promote gross motor development of children at young age such as in kindergarten.
