Tears of the Moon: Study on the Symbolism of Silver in Georg Trakl's Sebastian in the Dream

초록

The silver color that appears in Georg Trakl’s Sebastian in Dream indirectly symbolizes the moon. The symbolism of silver is summarized in the following three. First, the function of silver is double. The silver color embodies the sensational impression of natural scenery such as moonlit night, moonlight shining water surface and forest. At the same time, the poet’s emotions, psychology, and values lie in the depths of the physical phenomenon of silver. In short, silver clearly visualizes the poet’s inner world through color images. Second, silver is ambivalent. Silver symbolizes memories of childhood, nostalgia for the past, communion with nature, solitude, melancholy, sadness, despair, fear, death, premonition of the end of the world, and disillusionment with civilization. In other words, silver expresses both positive and negative emotions at the same time. Third, silver is synesthesia. Silver integrates hearing and vision. In this way, silver stimulates the poetic imagination and expands the horizon of sensory perception.
