English Learning Motivation and Demotivation of Korean Female High School Students: Comparison Between Public and Foreign Language Schools

초록

The purpose of this study is to compare English learning motivation and demotivation of public high school students with that of foreign language high school students. A Likert-type questionnaire method was conducted, and the data of 248 students were analyzed. The survey was conducted from May 9 to May 10, 2019. Results indicated that foreign language high school students showed a significantly higher level of the ideal L2 self and motivated behavior than public high school students did. However, the result of linear regression analysis revealed that instrumentality (prevention-focused) was the significant predictor variable that had a negative effect on motivated behavior. Foreign language high school students responded that they were demotivated due to inadequate textbooks and the lack of confidence as public high school students did. However, the degree was significantly lower than that of public school students. Public school students appeared to have significantly more negative perceptions toward English, and the negative perceptions toward the people who use English were turned out to be the most powerful predictor variable of their demotivation. The findings also indicated that demotivation was not a mirror image of motivation, and various subcomponents in motivation had positive correlations with those in demotivation.
