This paper describes our method that generates digital bas-reliefs using a smartphone. Most of previous works for bas-relief generation take input in the form of 3D models. However, obtaining 3D models of real scenes or objects is often difficult, inaccurate, and time-consuming. From this motivation, we developed the method that takes photographs of general scenes as input which can be easily and quickly captured by an ordinary smartphone. Given a sequence of photographs as input, our method computes a depth map of a reference photograph. The value range of the depth map is effectively compressed using adaptive histogram equalization to enhance contrast levels. However, the depth map has little information on details of scenes. We compute a gradient magnitude image from the reference photograph to overcome this problem. In order to reflect both depth and scene detail information, we perform composition of the three images to generate a new depth map. The new depth map is directly converted to bas-relief surface mesh where each depth value in the map is used for elevating the surface. Experimental results show that our method generates realistic bas-relief surface from general photographs using only ordinary smartphones and PCs.
