초록

The 「From the Sea to a Boy」 which is the prefatory poem to the Boy magazine is a major canon of literature education. However, its significance of being ‘the first’ in the history of literature only has been highlighted, whereas it has been evaluated as lacking the poesy and being substandard in terms of formality as well. The Boy always had a prefatory poem at its beginning; each of those poems was individual work, yet had a role of introduction that presented the content of the entire magazine compressively. The 「From the Sea to a Boy」 which is the prefatory poem to the first issue of the first volume of the Boy is connected with the entire development process of the Boy. The exaggerated voice of the sea calling a boy made readers hope for unknown civilization and played a role in making them have intense curiosity for the magazine which would lead them into the unknown world. The Boy that was published for a total of twenty two volumes for two and half years was the process of strategically exploring the journey of ‘a kiss’ happily presented in the 「From the Sea to a Boy」. The ‘boy’ representing a new generation wants to go across the ‘sea’ and experiences the change in identify in that process. The prefatory poem was the starting signal and symbolic map of such journey. The poetic form of the 「From the Sea to a Boy」 is needed to be seen in terms of efficient delivery of a prefatory poem rather than the form experiment of a new poem. That’s because how to move the hearts of readers to deliver the message more effectively is the realistic worry of a prefatory poem. The formal specificity of the repetitive structure of stanzas of cross-component of onomatopoeia, rhyme and verse-line is the result of this worry. Thus, the new form of the 「From the Sea to a Boy」 is effectively performing the process that helps readers understand easily, experience intense emotion and accept through repetition. The Boy magazine was in the forefront as a new educational medium and the 「From the Sea to a Boy」 was formed as the most optimized form to perform the role of the prefatory poem to this magazine. Therefore, the imperfection of this education canon can be newly interpreted. The imperfection can be a place of living education of the history of literature in that the journey of trial and error that should be borne rather by the generation that should pass through the paradigm shift is inherent in it and that the process is dramatically illustrated throughout the Boy.
