초록
This study analyses the determinants of service trade among OECD member countries using the empirical models induced by incorporating regulation and technical variables into the Melitz(2003) model. Since most of trade in services takes place through commercial presence, it is expected that narrower institutional and technological gaps between trading partners increase bilateral service trade. In addition, we try to analyse the empirical model that includes a theoretical specification for the multilateral trade resistance terms to obtain consistent estimates. The empirical results of this paper show that bilateral trade regulation and IT usage divides, along with the size of economies, are significant determinants of services trade. However, when the multilateral trade resistance is not controlled, the estimates came out inconsistently. This indicates that introducing the multilateral trade resistance is significant to reduce the gap between theoretical and empirical forecasts on the determinants of service trade. Similar results are obtained in the analysis of sub-sectors of OECD service industry which includes finance, business and transportation. Accordingly, deregulation and small gap in IT usage between trading partners facilitate service trade. This implies that international cooperation for the relaxation of trade regulation and the encouragement of IT usage will be an effective way to accelerate trade in service.
