초록

This study tracked the flux of affect induced by the audience or the crowd depending on the size of the screen that changes under new media environments. The traditional film screen is a fixed device that projects light on a huge screen in a dark theater. Today, however, the screen has broken free from a fixed device reproducing images in a theater to take the form of TVs or computer screens and be distributed to each household. Now, it has even acquired portability through the mobile platform. Therefore, the 21st century requires a redefinition of the meaning of screens that evolve like life forms, running alongside rapid information transfer. In the understanding of the screen according to environmental change, it is important to note that it is an inevitable medium that mediates the interaction between human and screen, that between humans, and ultimately connects individual and community. Also, as the screen recreates the image, we should focus on the consequent affect and its flux. In order to understand the relationship between the screen and affect, we must identify the heterogeneity of individuals or the crowd that faces the screen. Therefore, this study sought to understand the relationship between the screen and the human body and focused on the point of change through social network. Moreover, by defining affect as the motive power that moves social network, we tried to identify the flux of affect from the screen to the individual and from the individual to the community by comparing and applying Jodi Dean’s and Henry Jenkins’s versions of affect. The purpose was to be vigilant against the possibility that the researcher’s analysis may become subjective. The point of significance in this study is the interpretation of the historical event of candlelight vigils by the crowd, affect, and medium, which was the mobile screen. As a result, we were able to identify not only the affect of the crowd that passes through the new screen but also the political identity within the affect. Especially, by expanding Michel de Certeau’s concept of ‘pedestrian speech acts’ to the mobile screen in our interpretation, we were able to gain an understanding relevant to the contemporary. The point of interpretation of political possibility contained by the candlelight vigil through a small map in our hands and an evolved mobile screen was a grain of success.
