Exploring ecological language education for the sustainable development and appropriate pedagogy

초록

This paper begins with an incident in which the UN announced language as a key element in achieving the next 15 years of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals). Announced in September 2015 at the United Nations, for example, the 17 goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development targeted various fields from education to technology to preserve the environment and bring economic growth. In order to find how language can practically work as a tool for sustainable development, however, in-depth theoretical and empirical research needs to be explored. In this study, the previous literature was researched firstly on ‘sustainable development’, and secondly on the related ‘appropriate technology/pedagogy’. Then ecological approaches of language education were suggested to provide a theoretical basis for the sustainable development and appropriate language pedagogy. In an ecological model, language education is seen as a process which is part of and closely interrelated with a large range of natural and cultural ecological factors. It can be focused on the question of maintaining a diversity of language by seeking to identify those ecological factors that keep sustainable development and appropriate pedagogy. It was also discussed how ecological language models differ from conventional approaches to language education. Possible areas of further research was also discussed.
