초록

Yoon Hu-myong became a novelist in 1979 after winning the *Hankook Ilbo* New Year’s Literary Contest. In 1967, he won the *Kyunghyang Shinmun* New Year’s Literary Contest under the pen name Yoon Ju-hyeong and became a poet. As a poet, he used the pen name Yoon Sang-gyu. In 1977, he published a poetry collection titled *Myeonggung*. The poet Yoon Sang-gyu transformed into the novelist Yoon Hu-myong. This became a major topic of discussion within the Korean literary community at the time. This paper examines Yoon Hu-myong’s early novels, “San yeok” (1979) and “All Stars Make Music” (1983). The first research question is: What are the narrative characteristics of Yoon Hu-myong’s early novels? The second research question is: What prompted him to switch genres from poetry to fiction? The third research question is: What is the literary significance of his early novels? Yoon Hu-myong’s debut work, “San yeok” is a structurally sound piece. It makes effective use of mystery techniques and features a dramatic twist at the end, making it an engaging read. This novel adheres closely to the conventions of the New Year’s Literary Contest. The author has hidden his “secret of birth” within the work. Yoon Hu-myong used the “overwhelming influence of war” as the narrative backdrop. The author himself is projected onto the character of “her” in the novel. This work demonstrates Yoon Hu-myong’s interest in the “origin of existence.” “All Stars Make Music” is a collection of the short stories “Samuje” (1980), “Saseong” (1982), and “Dongrae Poetry Collection”(1982). It can be described as a “short story series-style novella.” This work overlaps three distinct time frames: the present, during which the author holds a three-day memorial service for his father; the past, in which he recalls his middle school days; and the time depicting his college years. In his early works, Yoon Hu-myong freely moves back and forth through time. Yoon Hu-myong’s early fictional world reflects the historical context of the late 1970s and early 1980s. His novels can be interpreted as a literary response to Korea’s oppressive political reality. Yoon Hu-myong’s early novels are related to the Buddhist “Theory of Cause and Effect” He pioneered the “short story series-style novella” format and expressed the “political nature of distancing oneself from reality.” Yoon Hu-myong referred to his literary world as the “roots of solitude.” This can be interpreted as a critique of real-world politics while maintaining a distance from popular politics. By transitioning from poet to novelist, Yoon Hu-myong pursued a “literary record of the Secret Meaning of life.”
