Research on Oh Jang-hwan - Focusing on the transformation aspect of poetic consciousness -

초록

This study investigates Oh Jang-hwan’s poetic consciousness. Two factors were the driving forces in forming its foundation: one based on his view of literature as “literature for humans.” He valued literature that was compatible with “normal life,” showed his advanced consciousness in that he pursued “literature for humans” rather than “literature for literature.” In other words, the task of reflecting on the technicalism of modernism at the time and actively responding to reality was more important to him than anything else. The other factor stems from his personal history as an illegitimate child. Deep-rooted discrimination against illegitimate children, which did not subside even when he was growing up, became a driving force pushing him to break free from the Confucian traditions and customs surrounding him and movetoward a new, advanced, and open world. Oh Jang-hwan’s poetic consciousness evolved into “denial and criticism of traditions and customs,” “pathological decadence, despair, and original sin consciousness,” and “active commitment to social reality.” Strong denial and criticism of the traditions and customs led him to leave his hometown and seek a new, advanced, and open world. However, because the “reliable reality” that he longed for was absent, a sense of homecoming was revealed. After liberation, Oh Jang-hwan’s perception of his hometown shifted toward one of rebirth, providing him with “courage and hope.” In addition, immediately after liberation, Oh Jang-hwan created progressive poetry that revealed strong politics through his active commitment to social reality. Subsequently, he defected to North Korea and created more ideologically strengthened poetry. Through his work, Oh Jang-hwan fiercely responded to the reality of his time and dreamed of a progressive future. Overall, the foundation of his poetic consciousness lies in his view of literature as “literature for humanity, not literature for literature’s sake.”
