독일 베버 신부의 사진과 관찰자적 기록 - 1915년 『고요한 아침의 나라』를 중심으로 -

초록

The common view in books published by foreign tourists visiting Korea in the late 19th century was imperial orientalism and white supremacy already learned in the West, and photos taken in Korea were illustrated as empirical tools. However, Father Weber's "The Land of the Silent Morning" contains pure content viewed through the eyes of missionaries, such as field experiences, unlike false preconceptions learned as a group. Rather, the author implies post-orientalism in a neutral attitude to record events as they are while observing them with his own eyes at the site of the visit.The author did not disparage or despise Korea and Korean folklore that have not yet been modernized from a superior Western perspective, observing traditional Korean customs and secular beliefs, especially unscientific Korean worship such as shamanism, exorcism, etc.Father Weber filmed most of his travels in Korea with black and white glass plates inserted into the Linhof folder view camera, and some used autochrome photographs prepared in advance in Germany before departure. Later, the bride returned to Germany to create a glass plate colored slide in positive from autochrome to make an educational slide, and also selected some of the black and white glass plates to create a transparent glass slide, some partially or entirely colored on top of it.
