초록
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the Mind-Subtraction Meditation program, practiced as part of the free semester curriculum in the middle school context, on the level of self-reflection, concentration and happiness among the students. The Mind-Subtraction Meditation program was offered to the students once a week with each session up to 2 hours for 8 weeks from August to December, 2017. Data was gathered, before and after the program, from 140 students from 3 middle schools located in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do areas. We used two types of data: responses from survey questionnaires administered before and after the program, and personal journals written by some selected students themselves. The statistical analyses of the data revealed the following: First, the levels of the students’self-reflection and concentration in class were significantly higher after the meditation program. Secondly, 2 out of 6 items in the happiness scale showed significant improvement, In addition, five themes emerged from qualitative analysis, done by NVIVO, of the student journals:‘mood’,‘interpersonal relationship’,‘mind’,‘concentration’, and‘learning’. These results were discussed along with possibilities of school-based meditation in an effort to achieve the goal of the free semester curriculum policy for middle school students.
