실존의 사실주의 : 류인 작품 분석

초록

The artist Ryuin, who was born in 1956 after the Korean War, called out to the audience to exist as a work due to be influenced by existentialism that had induced a new awakening of existence. The audience in the 1980s, when Ryuin was most active, interpreted his works as a way of gaining the power of social transformation such as the democratization movement in the oppressed reality. While the Ryuin work was read naturally through the historical situation at that time, if we look back at Ryuin's works over time, we could see the shapes of the human body that speak about the existence of human beings regardless of the age. His works portray the mental emptiness of modern people who were left out through the modernization process and the absurdity of life that still remain, and demonstrated an existential attitude to resist them through dramatic expressions, 「The Stranger」, a novel written by Albert Camus provides us with the reasons to live a fierce and valuable life(existence) by enlightenment of life's absurdities, which is inevitable death. The dramatic tension and resistance of motion demonstrated by Ryu In's human body sculpture are interpreted as fierce battle of the existence. Freedom, responsibility, absurdity, gaze of the others, etc. stated by Albert Camus are integrated through Ryu In, leading to monumental establishment based on expression of will to accept and overcome the absurdities with individual responsibility. Ryu In contains the clue towards the existence within the explicit figure of human body. The life and arts of the artist call attention of the viewers to the fact that freedom is fate and accompanied by responsibilities. Therefore, his works demonstrate anxiety in a sense that a human should manage all the things but also show the process of which deficient essence is established through life. Ryu In's works demonstrate emphasis, omission, transformation and distortion in terms of human body expression, which should be understood as the artist’s intention to raise questions on the absurdities of existence and the world.
