Jia Zhangke aims for realism to realistically reproduce history of China and the lives of the people. His cinema focuses on truly capturing the hopes and despair of the younger generation who have survived the upheaval of Chinese history. The history of China in the movie is far from being a heroic character or record of historical events. Reproducing his history was focused on ‘the real life aspect of the people’s life and history’. Movie costumes that evoke historical meaning and background are regarded as mise-en-scène, which looks at history and captures it realistically. Jia Zhangke uses costumes as a ‘highlightist reproduction method,’ which is linked to embodying the realism aesthetics he pursues. Costumes are bodies governed by national ideology and reflect the era of oppression, such as ‘military uniform’ and ‘Zhongshan suit’. Also, the wearing of Western clothing such as ‘flared trousers’ and ‘T-shirts’ implies the atmosphere of reform and opening up of a changed generation. In the movie costume, lines and colors are icons of the times and reinforce the characters of the characters. Platform summons the history and thickens the characters of the characters through costumes and colors. In Platform, Zhongping and Inluigian prefer different colors. The giving of differentiated ‘color’ that can symbolically reveal their personality is the distinction of personality visually. Zhongping’s passionate and resistive personality is represented in red, and Inluigian’s compliant and calm personality is represented in achromatic and white. The color of the costume maintains the consistency of the character, but at the same time, the change of psychology according to the situation is also highlighted as an inconsistent choice of color.
