A Comparative Study on the Love Poetry of Henan Seolheon and Li Qingjiao

초록

The Joseon and Song dynasties were periods when traditional Confucian order was firmly established, requiring women to conform to patriarchal norms such as the “Three Obediences” (samjongjido). Within these social constraints, women faced significant restrictions to both their social and literary activities. Nevertheless, despite differences in their methods, both Heo Nanseolheon and Li Qingzhao sought to give poetic form to their emotions. This study conducts a comparative examination of love poetry in the Joseon and Song dynasties, focusing on Heo Nanseolheon and Li Qingzhao, from the perspectives of thematic expressions and emotional structures. Both poets reveal the emotional centrality of longing and a sense of loss for an absent beloved, projecting their feelings onto natural imagery to articulate their inner worlds. However, while Heo Nanseolheon metaphorically shapes her emotions through restraint and resignation, Li Qingzhao unfolds hers narratively by employing everyday language and dynamic natural imagery. Thus, Heo emphasizes restrained inner confession, whereas Li highlights active emotional expression in shaping the poetic self. In their different ways, Heo Nanseolheon of the Joseon dynasty and Li Qingzhao of the Song dynasty inscribed women’s voices within the oppressive framework of Confucian society, thereby contributing to the expansion of identity and diversity in East Asian women’s l iterature. This study demonstrates that their love poetry goes beyond mere emotional expression, embodying the dimensions of social oppression, female self-consciousness, and layered emotional structures.
