In this work, we have developed a simple colorimetric technique for the sensing of zinc ion (Zn2+) in the agricultural soil and tap water. This method implies the integration of glutathione functionalized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@GSH) with UV visible spectrometry for Zn2+ ion assay. The absorption spectrum of AgNPs@GSH shows a surface plasmon resonance band at 405 nm, however it shifts to 438 nm upon the addition of Zn2+ ion, which results a visible colour change from light yellow to deep orange. This observation confirms the aggregation of as-synthesized AgNPs@GSH in the presence of Zn2+ ions. The redshift of the SPR band in the absorption spectra of AgNPs@GSH is progressively linear with increasing amounts of Zn2+ ion (0.5–200 μM), with a limit of detection 0.479 μM. The developed AgNPs@GSH-based colorimetric approach provides a quick, simple and reliable miniaturized analytical platform for Zn2+ ion detection in agriculture soil and river water. To validate the developed colorimetric strategy, Zn2+ ion assay was carried out in real samples (soil and water), revealing the developed AgNPs-based nanosensor showed practical reliability in assaying Zn2+ ion in complex environmental matrices.
