This study examined whether there were differences in the degree of emotional arousal depending on the type of crime (theft, robbery, assault) when viewing mock crime videos, and whether there were differences in memory recall accuracy depending on central and peripheral information for each type of crime. A total of 110 experimental participants responded to the STAI-X scale to measure emotional arousal, and each viewed mock crime videos containing scenes of theft crimes (36 participants), robbery crimes (37 participants), and assault crimes (37 participants). They then completed the STAI-X scale again to measure post-arousal levels and responded to a memory recall questionnaire after performing a math task to distract memory, thereby measuring the accuracy of memory recall for central and peripheral information. The results showed that emotional arousal levels were higher in robbery crimes than in theft crimes (p=.01), and overall memory recall accuracy was also higher in robbery crimes than in theft crimes. In assault crimes, there was no significant difference in emotional arousal levels compared to other types of crimes, but the accuracy of memory recall for peripheral information was significantly higher than that for central information (p<.05). These results support recent studies using video stimuli for simulated crimes and provide important clues for witness testimony research.
