A Study of Emotional Structure and Ecological Symbolism in Cinematic Landscapes: Centering on The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

초록

This study analyzes the multilayered functions of cinematic landscapes in conveying emotional structures and ecological information, centering on the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013), integrating Plutchik’s emotion theory and cinematographic semiotic analysis to classify key scenes into emotion codes while extracting visual signs and ecological symbols; comparative analysis of emotional flow and information delivery methods—based on the urban-natural landscape dichotomy—revealed that urban spaces (e.g., offices, apartments) induce oppression/anxiety through closed compositions, visually articulating the protagonist’s isolation, whereas natural landscapes symbolize openness/growth, transmitting positive emotions via expansive spatiality and natural lighting; furthermore, natural elements (glaciers, snow leopards) function as symbolic signs implying ecological crises and conservation imperatives, effectively delivering ethical messages through emotional immersion, confirming landscapes operate as an "Emotion-Ecology Medium" that simultaneously executes emotional expression and ecological information delivery as a core visual apparatus constructing cinematic narratives/thematic consciousness, thereby establishing a theoretical foundation for eco-cinema and emotion-centered audience research through a convergent methodology combining emotion theory and ecological criticism.
