초록

This study investigates Florian Zeller’s family trilogy The Mother, The Father, and The Son by focusing on the mental illness of each protagonist: Anne, André, and Nicholas, in connection with each protagonist’s dismantling family relationship. Through this, it is found that the plays have a point of intersection that creates a family trilogy despite each play tending to present individual aspects. The study looks through the lens of Gaston Bachelard’s theory of space, especially focusing on the protective function of the house built through the interaction of the dwellers. Thus it defines the cause of each protagonist’s mental pain and investigates their damaged family relationship, tracing both the visible and invisible changes in their main space, the house. In addition, the study analyzes the factors that mentally threaten each protagonist at home, and examines the essential fear each protagonist encounters when their mental condition reaches a state of irreversible damage. Analyzing the tragic ending of the protagonist who mentally collapses and is left lonely in the hospital room, the paper argues that Zeller emphasizes the importance of home as a symbolic space in sustaining human existence. The study primarily highlights the deepening loneliness of individual humans who lose their sense of home built on family relations. Further, by comparing the meaning of each play’s last lines, it invites further consideration of the meaning of the contemporary family that Zeller presents.
