This paper examines Written on the Edge of Life写在人生边上, a collection of essays by Qian Zhongshu, through the dual lenses of adversity and self-marginalization. Written during Shanghai’s Isolated Island period, the essays reflect not only Qian’s personal sense of resignation but also a deep-seated anxiety regarding the fate of the nation during a time of profound historical crisis. By situating the collection within this unique historical context, the study seeks to uncover the latent unease that permeates Qian’s contemplations on life. Unlike many of his contemporaries in literary and academic circles, Qian Zhongshu consistently cast himself as an outsider in both his creative writing and scholarly endeavors. He deliberately distanced himself from political involvement and remained apart from the dominant literary movements of his time. As the title of the collection suggests, his perspective on life is one shaped from the margins—a standpoint from which he pursued independent philosophical reflections through discursive reasoning. Written on the Edge of Life thus holds particular significance in Qian Zhongshu’s literary career. As his only essay collection, it represents a foundational point of departure: encapsulating the core concerns of his later literary output while embodying the intellectual ethos that guided his academic work. Its themes and perspectives reveal a continuity that links this early work to the broader trajectory of his thought and writing.
