The Determinants of Multimodal Transport Route Selection between Korea and Land-locked Countries in Europe

초록

This study objectively examines the relative importance of various decision-making factors and thecompetitiveness by route in Korea’s container exports to land-locked European countries. Based on expert opinions from practitioners in export companies and the logistics industry, aqualitative analysis was conducted using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The study establishesfour key evaluation criteria—transport cost, transit time, transport distance, and service quality—andapplies quantitative analysis to assess each route. AHP results indicate that transport cost is the most critical factor in route selection, as derived fromthe first-priority weightings of survey respondents. Standardized scores (Z-scores) were calculatedbased on actual freight rate data for each route, and these were combined with AHP weights tocompute a competitiveness index. Among the routes analyzed, the route to Slovakia via Belgiumshowed the highest competitiveness, suggesting that in some cases alternative routes may offersuperior advantages in terms of cost and time over traditional paths via Germany or the Netherlands.
