Nurses’ experience using a barcode point-of-care technology: A qualitative descriptive focus group study

Objective and rationale Accurate patient identification is essential for ensuring patient safety, yet it remains a persistent challenge in clinical practice. In this study, we aimed to explore the experiences of nurses using a barcode point-of-care (BPOC) technology with a personal digital assistant system. Methods In this qualitative descriptive study, data were collected through five focus group interviews with 24 nurses from September 29 to November 7, 2023, and were analyzed using content analysis. Results The results revealed three key themes: “Enhancing patient safety through barcode technology,” “Addressing challenges in usability and Electronic Medical Record integration,” and “Fostering a culture of patient safety.” Participants perceived that, although the BPOC system has the advantage of increasing patient safety, it also has the inconvenience of delaying work. Participants addressed the need for efforts to improve utilization of the BPOC system. They identified several strategies that enhanced their usage, including monitoring and feedback at the unit level and improving functions based on nurses’ requests at the institutional level. Conclusion To effectively establish and utilize a BPOC system, it is crucial to emphasize its importance and ensure user compliance. Furthermore, identifying user challenges and providing necessary support is essential.
