Reconfigurable metasurfaces (RMSs) typically employ multiple positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diodes and varactors as active switching components to achieve dynamic reconfigurability. However, their need for continuous external biasing results in non-negligible power consumption, and the large number of active components significantly increases the cost. To address these issues, we propose a highly cost-effective RMS that is fabricated on an FR-4 substrate and uses surface-mount device (SMD) slide switches as passive tuning elements. Unlike PIN diodes or varactors, these mechanical switches do not require any external power for operation, and the use of both the switches and an FR-4 substrate contributes to the overall cost-effectiveness of the proposed RMS. Owing to its scalability and practicality, the proposed RMS is expected to serve as a reconfigurable intelligent surface for next-generation indoor wireless communication.
