Auscultation remains as a cornerstone of clinical diagnosis, yet traditional stethoscopes are limited by their requirement for professional expertise and face-to-face examination. Mobile stethoscopes leveraging smartphone technology and artificial intelligence offer transformative potential for accessible diagnostic healthcare. This survey reviews mobile auscultation systems in three dimensions: (1) hardware implementations ranging from pure smartphone-based approaches to hybrid designs with external sensors, (2) signal processing and artificial intelligence techniques, and (3) clinical applications spanning telemedicine, pediatric care, and resource-limited settings. Key challenges include environmental noise interference, data scarcity with medical audio datasets, and limited scale of clinical validation. We identify promising future directions including multimodal sensor integration, federated learning for privacy preserving model training, explainable AI for clinical trust, and standardized evaluation protocols. As these technologies mature, mobile auscultation has the potential to democratize access to diagnostic healthcare worldwide.
