Analysis on Types of Journalists’ Perception toward Social Media

초록

The purpose of this paper is to delve into what kinds of perception news organizations’ reporters have toward social media. By using the Q methodology research technique, the three types of journalists was identified. The three types are ‘utilizing collective intelligence’through social media (Type 1), ‘sticking to traditional analog media coverage’(Type 2) and ‘the social media for customize communication & expanding’(Type 3). The type 1 is a positive approach to using social media as journalists of this type have a tendency to believe information gleaned from social media helps them develop news stories and gather more information. The journalist identified as Type 2 think that social media is a source of information that is biased or socially obsessed caused by the filter bubble or the information cascades. For them, information carried in social media has a factor that lowers its credibility. Therefore, they think they should rely on face-to-face contact to gather information. The type 3 journalist is those supportive of social media usage. In addition to information that journalists acquire at beats covered by them, they believe it is very important to actively use information coming from social media as their sources. The suggestion to increase the utility and the credibility of social media as a source of the information, was to have a complementary measure, so called “fact check system”, in the editorial room.
