초록

Music, fine arts and literature have developed by exchanging theories or methodologies with each other. Especially, Kim Chun-Su developed his nonsense poetry theory based on fine arts and music. This thesis aims to examine how these other genres of arts contributed to the forming of his nonsense poetry theory and the writing of his poetry focusing on his poem “Lee Jung-Seob Series.” The poem suggests that he was heavily indebted to painters including Cezanne, Jackson Pollock, and Picasso and musicians including Mozart, etc in developing his nonsense poetry theory. He also developed descriptive images believing they were more pure than metaphorical images and tried to overcome even the meaning, object, and image of poetry. While Kim Chun-Su said that he borrowed descriptive images in his poetry from the minimal arts of fine arts and his poetry was based upon his nonsense poetry theory that was influenced by Cezanne and Jackson Pollock, it seems clear that that Lee Jung-Seob Series also came under the influence of Cezanne and Picasso. Kim said that if a poem failed to possess content, meaning, and images, there would remain only rhythms. Just as we think that symphonies don’t have any particular subject matter or refer to specific objects, because composers don’t confer any title on them except numbers, and so are quite appealing to us, Kim thought that a poem could be considered a good poetic work even if its objects, meanings, and unified images were removed. In other words, it means that just as Jackson Pollock produced his work of arts by scattering paints over the canvas, a poem could be a wonderful poetic work without particular objects or meaning. However, a title such as “Cheoyongdanjang” appears in his poems, which means that his intention was presented as a guideline for interpretation. If he had given such a title as “Untitled” to his poem instead of a specific title, his readerscould embrace the poem without associating their own impression with any object, meaning or images. Furthermore, the poem “Lee Jung-Seob Series” is not a genuine nonsense poem because it contains images conveyed by phrases related to Lee Jung-Seob’s life and paintings as well as having a title. However, his nonsense poetry theory is receiving a great deal of attention from poets who are seeking new theories and techniques because it borrowed the techniques of fine arts and music and enriched the Korean world of poetry based on theories and techniques of poetry. In the future, poetry should borrow theories and techniques from the neighboring arts and expand its domain as a form of literature. Especially as all arts are being integrated and blended as a way of seeking new directions, poets should not depend on only linguistic techniques but seek methodologies beyond language when writing poems. The theories and techniques of neighboring arts could provide a rich source or wellspring for such a quest.
