The Nativization of Foreign Elements through Hybrid Neologisms

초록

This study analyzes foreign elements with a focus on the dependent forms of hybrid neologisms collected by the National Institute of Korean Language from 1994 to 2013, focusing on bound forms. It comprehensively explicates the modes by which these foreign elements are used to create hybrid neologisms and become nativized. Dependent foreign elements, the subject of this study, were divided into two categories: root-forming elements and affixes. Root-forming elements generally comprise prepositive and postpositive elements of acronyms and hybrid words, and their productivity in hybrid word formation indicates the extent to which they have been nativized. ‛-템’, ‛덕-’ are representative of this category. Affixes like ‛-러’, ‛-쿠스’(foreign affixes that have been largely nativized) and ‛맨’, ‛걸’(foreign non-affixes that have become affix-like) were also examined. It is shown that the foreign elements of hybrid neologisms were nativized more readily than native elements, and it thus follows that hybrids are a significant mode through which foreign elements become nativized.
