Transformation of Chronotope Theory and its Application to Rashomon according to Media Characteristics

초록

The purpose of this study is to understand how Mikhail Bakhtin"s concept of chronotope changes depending on the characteristics of the medium. To this end, this study examines the changes of chronotope in the film and theater adaptations of Akutagawa Ryūnosuke"s "Rashomon" and "In the Grove." In particular, taking into account the fact that chronotope manifests itself in different sizes of time and space, and that human perception is divided into historical space and present space, this study analyzes the changes of chronotope in the microscopic and macroscopic dimensions. Chronotope is a concept that embodies the sense of time and space that the reader/viewer perceives in a story. It does not merely describe the background of a work, but also acts as an emotional basis for the interpretation of events. As a result, chronotope is a basic condition for the formation of a theme. In this study, the influence of the way in which individual media implement chronotope on revealing the subject is examined.
