Gender Comparison of the Complex Factors on Anti-feminist Attitudes of Korean Young Adults in Their Twenties

초록

This study explores complex factors and the relative importance of each factor influencing anti-feminist attitudes among Korean young adults in their twenties through gender comparison. The study used the data, 2019 Survey on Public Perceptions of Society, Politics, and Gender. The major findings of multiple regression analyses are as follows. First, unlike the results of previous research, the variable of dating experience had no significant effect on men’s antifeminist attitudes, but was associated with pro-feminist attitudes among women. Second, perceptions on both meritocracy and conscription reform were positively associated with anti-feminist attitudes among men and women. Lastly, pressure on masculine norm showed a positive association with anti-feminist attitudes across genders, while pressure on feminine norm a negative association. Among all variables, pressure on feminine norm had a relatively large influence in reducing anti-feminist attitudes for both men and women. On the other hand, pressure on masculine norm and perception on conscription reform had a relatively large influence in raising anti-feminist attitudes for both women and men. These results imply that feminism may be an alternative to escape from femininity, but Korean society does not yet have an alternative to masculine norm.
