초록

This study observed how the tradition of personification of the seven liberal arts succeeded and transformed by examining the iconography in The Queen Philosophy and Seven Liberal Arts created by Herrad of Landsberg in the 12th century. In his allegory, The Celestial Marriage of Mercury and Philology, Martianus Capella introduced the prototype of the “union of human knowledge” by presenting the personification of the seven disciplines. Herrad inherited this tradition and tied it to the religious value of Divine Wisdom. By arranging seven women, the personifications of the seven disciplines, in a complete circular structure, the iconography emphasizes the integration of knowledge. In a 12th century abbey, knowledge was a tool to understand the world created by God and to more easily approach the Lord. The Queen Philosophy and Seven Liberal Arts pictorially and clearly displays the metaphysics of attaining salvation by linking the different areas of knowledge together. The present iconography shows that there has been a spiritual aspect in the tradition of the liberal arts that has emphasized a “unified and integrated human knowledge,” becoming a solid foundation for enriching human beings. Using knowledge in order to better understand the world in a more balanced manner, the Western tradition in liberal education has explored the values needed in a particular era.
