Epigenetics encompasses the study of heritable changes in gene function that do not involve alterations to the DNA sequence itself. These changes can influence when or how genes are activated or inactivated and can have a significant impact on plant development. The primary mechanisms underlying epigenetic regulation include histone modification and chromatin remodeling. Recent studies have shown that histone modification and chromatin remodeling are involved not only in development but also in the diverse stress responses of plants. These modifications lead to further repositioning of nucleosomes along DNA, making certain genomic regions more or less accessible to transcription factors and other DNA-binding proteins. This review provides a general overview of the types of epigenetic regulators found in the Arabidopsis model plant. In particular, it aims to provide a current understanding of the collaborative activities exhibited by histone modifiers and remodelers in terms of stress response in Arabidopsis plants. Understanding how epigenetic regulators interact with stress-response genes is crucial for developing crops that can withstand exposure to multiple types of stress.
