The Online Gender Conflict Experience and Affective Politics of the 2030 Generation

초록

This study analyzes the online gender conflict of the 2030 generation, which has become entrenched as a political issue in Korean society, from the perspective of affective politics. Affects, distinct from emotions, are bodily and unconscious responses that operate as a force in everyday life, bypassing political power and discourse structures. Using the affect theory of Spinoza, Deleuze, and Massumi as a theoretical framework, this study understands online spaces as a field of affective politics and focuses on how online gender conflicts are constructed through bodily encounters and affective experiences. To achieve this, 11 participants from the 2030 generation were selected for focus group interviews (FGI), exploring their experiences of online gender conflicts, affective responses, and alternative practices. The analysis revealed that online gender conflicts tend to be triggered more by generalizations about the characteristics of individuals or groups rather than the context of specific events. Through comments, memes, and short videos, hate emotions were reproduced in playful or satirical forms. In these conflict situations, participants experienced negative affects such as anger, confusion, and fatigue, which either led to detachment, avoidance, helplessness, and self-censorship, or were transformed into collective action as they recognized the possibility of solidarity. This study sheds light on the 2030 generation's online gender conflict experiences within the context of affective politics and explores the possibility of alternative affective practices that transcend gender conflicts, offering both theoretical and social significance.
