Exploring Motivation for Participation and Factors Influencing Exercise Continuation and Discontinuation among Street Workout Hobbyists

초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore in depth the motivations for participation, as well as the factors influencing the continuation and discontinuation of exercise among street workout hobbyists, with the goal of increasing public participation in street workout activities. Method: A total of 10 participants with more than five years of street workout experience were recruited using snowball sampling. The sample included five hobbyists who had maintained continuous participation and five who had discontinued. A semi-structured interview guide was developed based on prior research and a literature review, then refined through expert consultations and a pilot study. Data collected from in- depth interviews were analyzed using inductive content analysis to categorize themes and derive results. Results: Participants reported that they initially became aware of street workout through social networking services (SNS), television programs, and friends. Their motivations for participation included a desire for muscle development, the challenge of learning impressive movements, and naturally beginning street workout while performing bar exercises with peers. Perceived advantages of street workout included freedom of location, visually appealing performance movements, natural muscle development, and cost- effectiveness. Key factors influencing exercise continuation were awareness of others, social media engagement, club membership, the creation of a supportive street workout environment, and a sense of accomplishment. These factors enhanced enjoyment and satisfaction among club members, facilitating sustained participation and personal development. However, among the persistence-related factors, social media–related benefits were found to decrease motivation over time. Major factors contributing to exercise discontinuation included injury, aging, and perceived difficulty, which ultimately hindered continued participation. Conclusion: In summary, this study suggests that active participation in clubs and engagement in social networking site (SNS) activities, along with the dissemination of information related to street workout, are essential for sustained participation among hobbyists. Therefore, street workout participants should continue sharing information through SNS while remaining actively involved in club activities, thereby maintaining their motivation to continue exercising.
