폴 고갱과 문화다양성의 표상 -이국적 취미, 인종주의, 식민지주의 논란을 중심으로-

초록

This paper is an attempt to review the criticism of exotic hobbies, racism and colonialism raised against Paul Gauguin(1848~1903) and to newly interpret Gauguin and his works from the perspective of cultural diversity. Gauguin is a character who has both complexity and ambiguity in art history. This can be seen through the existence of various views on which school Gauguin belongs. Gauguin is generally divided into post-impressionism, symbolism, synthetism, and primitivism. However, there are some art historians who distinguish themselves as a school that is original and does not belong anywhere. The fact that Gauguin pursued an independent course without elements in common with other painters is also related to Gauguin's view of himself as a barbarian in Tahiti. What he claimed to be a barbarian meant he wanted to be separated from the Western civilization. However, some critics argue that Gauguin's work in Tahiti is a reflection of Western supremacy, racism and simple exotic taste rather than originality. However, this article attempts to analyze Gauguin's life and works in order to refute this argument. Gauguin actively expressed the uniqueness of Tahitian culture through his works. His works contain cultural diversity that recognizes the culture of Tahiti as it is, rather than a reflection of the exotic hobby linked to the transcendent or mystery of primitive Tahiti.
