Particularism or universalism? : Analysis on influence factors of hiring professors in Korea

초록

In Korea, there has been a belief that undergraduate degree from the top-level university will increase chances to get hired in a better job, which also seems to apply to the faculty-hiring markets in the higher education institutes where post-graduate training should be more important than undergraduate degree. In this regard, this study tried to scrutinize two competing hypothesis for which factors determine the recruitment of professors; the merit (universal) factors such as academic performances and the non-merit-based (particular) factors such as one’s affiliation in undergraduate degree. Collecting individual data from 629 professors in the public administration department from 91 Korean universities, this study conducted network analysis and regression analysis. The results can be summarized as follows. First, particularistic factors had an dominant impact on get hired in more reputable institutions when they first entered the faculty market after earning PhD degree. However, when professors moved to another university, universalistic factors such as higher research reputation and excellent qualitative productivity was also highly associated with the reputation of university.
