A Study on the Censorship Manuscript of Japanese colonial era’s Classical Changgeuk <Kim Yu-shin>

초록

This article reviewed the censorship manuscript of the classical changgeuk <Kim Yu-shin>, which was submitted in advance to the Police Department of the Japanese Government-General of Korea for a performance at the Japanese colonial era Dongchang Theater Company. This script was written by Kim Geon, who was a noted representative playwright in the theater industry at the time, in November 1944, when the Daedong-A War was nearing its end. In the history of Korean theater, research on pro-Japanese dramas has been limited because there are few related materials, including performance scripts, and the writers and directors who participated therein had kept all the contents discreet. Changgeuk <Kim Yu-shin> was a work that was performed as a major repertoire by the Dongchang Theater Company in the 1940s, while internally promoting as a so-called new side Changgeuk with music and dance. The censorship manuscript of Changgeuk <Kim Yu-shin> is a “performance manuscript” and “censorship manuscript” that shows the reality of the Japanese colonial era “pro-Japanese drama,” and it was submitted to the Governor- General of Joseon through the Joseon Theater Culture Association on November 6, 1944. This manuscript showed the planning intention, overview of the contents, and details of Changgeuk, as well as what censorship and position the Japanese Government-General of Korea, which conducted censorship, took on this Changgeuk. Herein, we appraised the reality of these censorship manuscripts.
