Variations in the Effects of COVID-19 on Suicidal Behavior Across Age Groups in South Korea

초록

Despite the World Health Organization’s declaration of the end of COVID-19 in 2023, the repercussions of the pandemic persist globally. In South Korea, the implications for suicide risk are a particular concern. This study explored the variations in pandemic-related impacts on suicidal ideation or planning among different age groups, and how associated risk factors have evolved over time. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2019 and 2021, 12,558 individuals aged 19 years and above were analyzed. Findings reveal that the pandemic significantly increased the likelihood of suicidal ideation or planning among young adults, whereas individuals over 60 years exhibited a significant decrease. Furthermore, economic vulnerability has emerged as a more pronounced predictor of suicidal behavior post-pandemic. These findings underscore the significant influence of the pandemic on young adults’ mental well-being, which policy efforts should prioritize enhancing.
