초록

The article aims to rethink and redefine the old and conventional question of “what is history?” by taking ‘memory and oblivion’ into scholarly consideration. Thanks to the recent controversy in holocaust studies and the effort to rehabilitate victims of atrocities committed by authoritarian governments, the so-called ‘memory studies’ emerged as new dominant interdisciplinary subject for historians. In step with this trendy interpretation the author, focusing on a comparative case of French Revolution vis-à-vis Haiti Revolution, explores how and to what extents a group/class/nation in power (re)fabricate, manipulate, exaggerate, and delete the past memory for the purpose of monopolizing ‘an ideologically correct’ historiography. The article concludes that history today is after all an endless antagonism and discontented negotiation between the standard edition of public memory accredited ‘from the above’ and the renewed edition of resistant anti-memory endorsed ‘from the below.’
