A Study on the National Korean Literature Center and the Composition and Utilization of Literary Contents

초록

As 1996 marked “the Literary Year,” construction of the National Korean Literature Center (hereafter, NKLC) was advocated; in 2013, the discussion was activated again by Korean literary circles. In 2015, with the passing of the Literature Promotion Act by the National Assembly, construction of the center was , and it is certain that NKLC has the potential to play a big role as the key space for promoting Korean literature. The civil society and literary circles are keen on identifying the right construction site for NKLC, but the discussion on the composition of its contents has not yet occurred. This study asserts that the composition of literary contents is important if NKLC is to serve as the mediating space for the promotion of Korean literature. Plans for NKLC conceptualize it as a mediating literary complex, a place of mental value production where writing and reading will occur. According to the Seoul National University Industry-Academia Cooperation Center’s survey on the collection of Korea’s recent-modern literary materials, books published from 1894 to 1945 number 4,545, representing 2,013 types. Additionally, there are of non-book materials from this period. Books published from 1945 to 1960 number 33,265, representing 3,180 types. From 1895 to 1945, 124 kinds of literary magazines were published. However, only 760 books from this period survived. Given that the construction of NKLC is now being discussed, there is a need to survey the status of recent-modern literary materials and gather, preserve, manage, promote, and popularize them. Research activities and surveys should be conducted to secure the recent-modern literary heritage. Additionally, there is a need to create an official committee for gathering these materials. Efforts should be made to identify priority materials for NKLC, solicit personal collections of materials, establish a beneficiary donation system, and devise measures for securing contents. In order to manage rare materials at the state level, a plan should be devised to secure three books for each kind of literary heritage. Furthermore, a system to preserve, maintain, manage, and promote the literary materials through duplicated versions is needed. An orderly framework for digital libraries and human libraries is required to manage NKLC’s contents and encourage the utilization thereof. For NKLC to serve as a live complex space for literary experiences, the spatial concept of “Larchiveum = Library + Archives + Museum” should be adopted. In the past, libraries focused on reading and lending books; archives and museums also focused on preservation and exhibition. The larchiveum serves as an expandable complex literary space enhanced by digital technology. Thus, for a user to be able to actively use the functions of a library, archives, and museum in a single space, NKLC should expand its functions. The projected NKLC as an indexing space must provide modern features. Indexing for the deployment of materials needs the entry of spatial meaning to offer value in the future. NKLC should be the cradle for discovering East Asian values and promoting the future mental culture. To that end, measures not swayed by economic logic are needed to secure, preserve, maintain, manage, and promote recent-modern literary heritage as a public asset.
