Purpose: This was a comparative study of the cognizance or awareness of biomedical ethics among of the Academic Credit Bank System with varying degrees of nurse's clinical experience. Methods: A total of 101 nurses were selected from an institute of industrial studies in Seoul, Korea, to participate in this study. Data were collected from September 2012 to May 2013. A total of 66 questions using a 4-point Likert Scale were administered. Data were then analyzed using the SPSS 20.0 program, with which the frequency, means, ANOVA and correlations. Results: The mean score of participants’ cognizance or awareness of biomedical ethics was 2.98. While scores were highest in the categories regarding “the right to life of fetuses” and “artificial abortion” (3.33 and 3.09, respectively), they were lowest on “brain death” and “euthanasia” (2.63 and 2.72, respectively). In addition, data analyses revealed that the nurses differed significantly according to clinical experience in two areas: the right to life of and euthanasia. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the differences in nurses’ consciousness of biomedical ethics according to their clinical experience were influenced by their personal experiences of treating patients. There is a need, therefore, to develop continuing education programs to improve nurses’ knowledge of biomedical ethics, particularly with regard to euthanasia.
