초록

This paper aims to propose the way to revise the punctuation mark rule by discussing what status the punctuation mark has in the Korean language policy and what external and internal conditions the Korean language rule should satisfy. The punctuation mark has been a part of the Korean language rule as an appendix in the Korean orthography. However its significance is crucial since it regulates the usage of punctuation mark, which is used in daily life, and it could be distinguished from the Korean orthography and treated separately. The National Institute of the Korean Language made minor regulations for punctuation mark to supplement the 1988 Korean orthography revision and in 2013 prepared to further revise punctuation mark. This thesis suggests actuality, acceptance, and fulfillment of needs as external requirements that Korean language rule should satisfy. As internal factors, adequacy, accuracy, understandability, and systemicity are required. Based on these factors, this paper examined the detailed parts of the punctuation revision, which is a necessary procedure to gain confidence from Korean language users.
