Relationship between Time Spent on Online Interaction, Family Cohesion, Relationship With Teachers, Depression, and Problematic Internet Use Among Adolescents

초록

Objectives : The study aimed to examine the structural relationship between time spent on online interaction, relationship with family and teachers, depression, and problematic internet use among adolescents. Methods : The sample included a representative 1,666 middle school students from 56 districts in Seoul and Gyeonggi provinces. Results : Our findings showed that time spent on online interaction had a positive influence on problematic internet use and a negative influence on the relationship with teachers. However, time spent on online interaction had no significant effects on depression or family cohesion. Depression was positively associated with problematic internet use. Family cohesion and relationship with teachers had an effect on depression. The relationship with teachers mediated the relationship between time spent on online interaction and depression. Moreover, depression mediated the effect of family cohesion or relationship with teachers on the problematic use of the Internet. Conclusion : Our findings suggest that strategies for a better relationship with the family teacher could be considered an approach to prevent and intervene in problematic Internet use in adolescents.
