A Comparative Study of Korean Gyobang and Japanese Geisha Cultures - Historical Contexts, Artistic Contributions, and Cultural Legacy

This paper comparatively examines Korean Gyobang culture and Japanese Geisha traditions, focusing on their historical development, training methods, societal roles, artistic contributions and cultural legacies. Despite superficial similarities, these traditions evolved distinctively within their respective national contexts. The study highlights significant differences between these female entertainment cultures. It analyzes how both traditions adapted during periods of colonization and modernization, contributing to traditional arts preservation and national cultural identity. Through this comparative lens, the research provides balanced insights into the artistic legacies of Korean Gisaeng and Japanese Geisha, illuminating their significance in contemporary cultural contexts.
