A Study on the Possibilities of the Oil Logistics Hub of Korea in Northeast Asia

초록

Northeast Asia(NEA) which geographically covers China, Korea and Japan, is one of the world fastest growing regions with a rapid growth of oil consumption and trade. Within the region, China, Korea, and Japan has been shown a great dependency of their oil consumption on foreign imports from Middle east region. While Korea exports its surplus petroleum products to China and Southeast Asian countries, China and Japan import petroleum products from abroad. As a result, trade volume of petroleum is expected to grow continuously in coming decades.Due to this situation, there exist strong opportunities and needs for an oil hub in NEA to reap the benefits of these favorable developments as well as secure stable and economical oil supply for the countries in the region. The purpose of the study is to examine the possibilities of the oil hub of Korea in NEA while evaluating the competitiveness of an oil hub between Korea and Singapore which is an oil hub in Asia. The conclusion is that Korea has good opportunities to become an oil hub in NEA but is necessary to improve the business environments to attract foreign oil partners including oil tank terminal companies and oil traders, while establishing more infrastructures related to the oil logistics management and improving institutions and regulations. Therefore it is suggested that further researches including the implementation strategies and policies should be undertaken in order to take advantage of the current good opportunities to be an oil logistics hub of Korea in NEA.
